There's yet another facial peel making news - but this one, commonly
called the "lunch hour peel", is being touted as a way
to remove fine lines, diminish stretch marks, and clear up acne
with virtually no healing time. The Derma Peel, Power Peel, or Parisian
Peel (depending on which machine is used) involves a device resembling
a mini sandblaster, which is passed across the skin bombarding it
with microscopic, abrasive crystals. Unlike deep chemical or laser
peels, which remove the upper layer of skin in one treatment, a
single peel removes only the topmost dead skin cells. Repeated treatments
- sometimes as many as 15 - are required to diminish lines and remove
superficial brown spots. Because the dermis remains intact, there's
no pain, bleeding or recovery time. According to Los Angeles plastic
surgeon Richard Ellenbogen, patients undergoing a peel experience
a slight tingling during the 45 minute procedure, and afterward
the skin is slightly red.
