Less is Better!!
Several deaths happened recently in Liposuction Surgery (LSS) gave
origin to a distorted information about how risky LSS is, that their
practice should be prohibited to the Dermatologists (Derm) and that
LSS must be performed only by Plastic Surgeons (PlSurg). No one
death was reported from 300,000 LSS performed by Derms between 1995
and 2000. So do neither any severe complication. By the contrary,
PlSurg had an index of death of 1 per every 5,000 LSS. The 5 main
causes of death were thromboembolism 23%, abdominal perforation
14.6%, aspiration 13.3%, complications due to anesthesia 10.0% and
fat embolism 8.5%. Other severe complications were abdominal perforation,
acute pulmonary oederma, retroperitoneal hemorrage, septic shock
and necrotizing fasciitis. All of these LSS were performed by non-Derm.
PlSurg are sued 113 times more than Derm. When a problem takes place
however, is to these last specialist s who operating room privileges
are taken off. In Latin America, deaths in LSS have been caused
only by non-Derm (PlSurg mostly). Nevertheless, Derm are always
blamed. Cool figures are our best defense and they don't lie. By
following closely the AAD/AACS guidelines for the performance of
LSS, this operation should be extremely safe. Answering the question
in the title: Nobody should die by LSS.
